Mint Team Spotlight - Atish Mehta

-
- Name:
- Atish Mehta
- Title:
- Software Engineer
- Education & Experience:
- Graduated USC with a B.S. in Computer Science. Did IT consulting in Los Angeles and a summer internship in Germany working on a Home Automation application. Worked at Walgreens in High school.
- Tell us a little bit about yourself.
- I’ve never been pregnant, never met Gorbachev, and was an alternate on the James B Conant High School Math Team, class of ‘01. I believe that the internet is the center of the universe.
- Tell us something interesting about yourself.
- I know how to play seven different instruments.
- Best financial tip?
- My advice to someone is to set a recurring transfer every month from your checking to your savings – pretend like you never even see that money in the first place. While you’re at it, every time you get a salary increase, put the difference away (or at least half of it) into your savings.
- Worst financial move?
- That $100 we spent at the hardware store to build that beer bong in college. Seemed like a good idea at the time… Should have used it to pay for food.
- How do you handle your finances?
- I hate to admit it, but before I joined Mint, I didn’t – I’m a great Mint user because I’m really lazy. I just checked my balance every month to make sure I had enough money to pay rent… but now, I use Mint.
- What’s the funniest/craziest thing you’ve seen while working at Mint?
- Seeing a fellow coworker getting out of a parking ticket (in the Bay Area) by hugging the meter maid. Also, one of our engineers chooses to stand while he works, that’s kind of weird.
- Why are you working at Mint?
- I work for Mint because I want to work for a company that makes a product that I will actually use, which really motivates me… Actually, the real reason I work here is because we have daily ping pong tournaments after lunch.
- What do you do at Mint?
- I am a software engineer. I work on aggregating data, talking to the banks/credit cards, and analyzing the overall health of the system… I also eat all the free snacks.
- Favorite part about working here?
- I love working with really smart people who are passionate about doing awesome things…and they’re cool to hang out with, so work is fun.
- What don’t you like about working here?
- I’d love to pull an Office Space and tear down these cubicles…
- What do you do after work?
- Create electronic music, see house DJ’s in the city, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Yelp. I guess technically, I do some of those at work also… shhh…
- Do you have a website or a blog?

i like this spotlighting thing, very cool
@jos: Very glad you liked it. Will be spotlighting more of our team in the coming weeks
This atish guy seems like a real jerk
Sounds fun to work at Mint.
Atish is the man !!!
Seem like you guys have a little Google work culture there. Too bad I’m not on the west coast.
Keep those spotlight posts coming.
You should fill those empty water bottles on that top shelf with yellow water and tell your coworkers that you were too busy working to get up and walk to the bathroom. They’ll be impressed by your dedication.
that guy has some serious bling. i want serious bling. if i take back my wallet, maybe i’ll get some serious bling. cool!
@Misiti: It is indeed fairly fun here, especially as soon as we get rid of this Atish guy.
@Moneymonk: Yes ma’am, we’ll keep them coming
@Reid: Atish has already tried that angle in his attempt in getting a raise.
@Eric: Well, it’s not always about the bling, but we hope Mint will be able to help you too.
@Cap@Reid
Yeah…and it didn’t work
Atish is my hero! His vast collection of water bottles hints at the classy gentleman underneath his yuppie exterior
This kid seems like a kool kat.
I just signed up for the beta. Where is it?
Atish - lucky you for using Mint. But how long til I can use it? I signed up for the “elite beta access”, but no invite yet
I need it quick so my wife doesn’t beat me for not setting up a budget. I haven’t done so because I hate Quicken, I hate MS Money, I hate Excel. But I’m hot and ready to make love to Mint.com! Bring it on! I can’t wait!
@zaphod and @Zach
That’s awesome that you are as excited/hot and ready about Mint as we are!…But, patience, we are currently limiting the # of beta invitees… all I can say is that it’s coming soon and it will be worth the bruises from your wife. Anyway, all the $ you save by using Mint should be enough to cover your hospital visit after we launch
Dood! Stop drinking water and hurry up and finish Mint!
Hehehe… I kid, of course.
But no, seriously…
Awwww… I got all excited. http://haveamint.com/
For nothing
Atish: Is that my picture in your cubicle? Mom
Atish you just replaced my former hero (no one) with yourself, congratulations.
I hate to break the mood but do you think you could explain how Mint will save me money, and how exactly the company itself makes money?
P.S.- You make some kick a** i mean arse music.
How is mint superior to existing sites, like https://www.wesabe.com/ ?
While I don’t know about superior as I have not use Wesabe yet, Mint does have a few major differences (as far as I can tell from reading the Wesabe site). For starters, we are not a social networking site, and we do not require you to export/import your statement to our site.
We also do not require you to download any software, as the application is entirely web-based (so you can access it anywhere in the world). Finally, we have patent pending algorithms that shows you personalized ways to save and make more money.
Edit: You know now that I think about it, I really should check Wesabe out too, gonna setup an account right now
Ok, now you’re just being plain MEAN! It’s not nice to tease people with phrases like “patent pending algorithms.” I swooned a bit when I read that.
Thanks for the info, Cap. But what kind of time-frame are we looking at? When can I at least join the beta? Or is Mint as secretive and tight-lipped as Steve Jobs & Apple Inc???
@Elissa, Algorithms have the effect on me as well.
